The unit ''Modern Physics'' is a significant portion of the physics syllabus of JEE Mains & Advanced and other similar engineering entrance exams (like WBJEE). Moreover, it is also an important constituent of the physics syllabus of intermediate examinations conducted by various states and central boards in India. In order to gain a proper and conceptual understanding of the subject, the very first requisite is to follow quality study materials. As far as one's board exams' preparations are concerned, only the standard NCERT texts books are well-enough, sufficient and most reliable, however if you are preparing for competitive engineering entrances, you must follow some additional books and study materials as well which strictly follow the syllabus of those entrances.

Modern Physics means the physics developed on the two major breakthroughs of the early 20th century i.e. the theory of relativity and the quantum mechanics. These two theories are the main building blocks of Modern physics. The physics based on what was known before 20th century (Newton's laws, Thermodynamics, Electromagnetism Maxwell's laws) is known as classical physics. Classical physics successfully explains almost all the physical phenomena occurring at macroscopic level. However it failed to accurately explain the microscopic level phenomena and the corresponding measurements which lead to the development of Modern physics.
Though the actual subject of modern physics is quite extensive and deep, it is only the very basic and introductory portion of modern physics that is present there in the syllabus of undergraduate physics courses.
